Project Description

Floyd Hall intends to produce Cascade Road, a multipart, narrative audio project that investigates the cultural capital associated with Cascade Road, one of Atlanta’s most prominent streets.

Constructed in podcast form and published over six episodes by fall of 2020, Cascade Road takes listeners on a journey about what makes this thoroughfare important to how Black culture is understood in Atlanta—including its political power, community leadership, artistic capital, class divides and intracommunity mobility, centers of commerce, and access to public infrastructure.

Does Cascade Road still represent the aspirational Black space it came to be in the 1960s?

Part oral history project, sound study, and storytelling vehicle, Cascade Road aims to interrogate culturally relevant touch points that help inform how Black culture was initially manifested in the communities along Cascade Road, what made them unique in comparison to other areas of Atlanta, and what changes are apparent in these areas as time passes, generations change, and new residents settle into established neighborhoods.
