HEREafter is an ongoing, immersive theater production centered on the story of an Atlanta family rattled by the loss of their matriarch. Along with New York-based co-director Kelly Bartnik and 6 local cast members, Kathleen Wessel will build on Episodes 1 and 2, which premiered in October 2019 and September 2020 respectively. Episode 3 is a progressive journey through the questions “How did we get here, and how do we find a way through?” by way of physical ascension up a 7-story parking garage. A nod to the head-spinning nature of grief, the audience’s role continually changes as they follow the characters, piecing together stories, discovering a backlog of family secrets and half-truths. Through movement, text and an original sound score by composer John Glover, HEREafter collides realism, memory and dreamscapes. As the story unfolds level by level, the viewer jumps time/space, internal/external worlds; they climb a Jenga game of emotional and physical states then step into the open-air for a moment of reckoning and the promise of something different, a window to a better future or an easier past. The ability to re-configure family dynamics and re-write the grief narrative awaits.
