In the body of work, The Muse of Misunderstandings, Kate Burke will create large-scale, embroidered paintings that explore the effects of technology on our mental landscapes. In using thread and dissolvable interfacing to execute her pieces, these materials iterate on the concepts of social feeds and electronic "threads" of communication. Burke will use the Idea Capital funds to invest in a digitized embroidery machine, allowing her to expand and play with the concept of scale in her work.

Textiles, a medium that we are in constant contact with, parallel the intimacy of inner-thoughts and dialogue within ourselves; they connect to the internal and personal ways we perceive ourselves and society. The dissolvable interfacing used to make Burke’s pieces illustrates a process that begins with a foundation, but then quickly (in its final form) becomes a piece that has no ground to it. This duplicity of form strikes a balance between what is tangible in this world and what is ethereal and intangible--providing a discussion between our technological engagement and the thoughts about ourselves that are grounded and sound, versus irrational thoughts that quickly unravel.
