“FREE WIFI” is an experimental digital and physical installation I will be exhibiting as an artist in the 2021 Atlanta Contemporary Museum Biennial. This exhibit details the extraordinary lives black men have the power to create despite Black America’s social, cultural, and political limitations as seen through the wake of a recently deceased man named WIFI (pronounced WEE-FEE). Much like the wifi some people lack sufficient access to in their homes, WIFI’s access to the outside world had been based on privilege or in his case, the lack thereof.  Unfortunately, the Digital Divide is just another way non-white communites are trapped in an endless cycle of poverty and it is reflected in the information we learn about WIFI’s life posthumously. Viewers learn that despite life's inherent setbacks WIFI persevered and did not allow himself to fall into the trap of the stereotypical poor black man. Instead, he experienced as much of the world as he could, making meaningful and impactful connections by maximizing the resources at hand.
