Project Description

Nyala Yvonne plans to create a series of experimental afro-surrealist short films that will push the boundaries of filmmaking and visual art. Rooted in her experience as a professional collagist, these films will serve as non-narrative moving collage artworks. Capturing guerrilla-style footage intuitively every day in Atlanta, Nyala seeks out beautiful and disturbing scenery, vibrant colors, textures, and the diverse lives of the city's black residents. In the editing process, Nyala applies the same techniques used in paper collage, cutting footage into intricate shapes and stacking it in eye-catching compositions. Intertwining paint brush strokes and paper collage fragments with the moving footage, she aims to create thought-provoking juxtapositions. The ultimate goal is to provide a visceral and purely artistic portrayal of Atlanta, transcending the limitations of words or scripts to capture raw sights, smells, sounds, textures, memories, and emotions. Nyala hopes that viewers, whether locals or visitors, will see a reflection of themselves in these films, fostering a deep and profound connection with the city.
