Project Description

In the late 1990's, David Earp had a fashionable business selling vintage clothes on London’s trendy Portobello Road, but in the chaos of Kolkata’s Howrah train station his life changed forever. Deeply moved by the plight of children with disabilities who had been orphaned or abandoned —David resolved to provide a home for children who need care for a lifetime.

Kolkata is now home to the unique family David has created where young people living with deafness or disability can be part of a family and receive the love and support they need for the rest of their lives. This home is called Shuktara - star of happiness.

Shuktara, the documentary, is a film about a worldwide problem of not seeing or recognizing how perfectly able people living with disabilities are: able to be creative, to be intelligent, to be loved and loving, and just to be. Support and resources make huge quality of life difference to people living with disabilities – and no one should be deprived of the right to live their best life in this world because of inadequate resources – in Atlanta or Kolkata.
